GPT-6 Is Here: What Changes for ChatGPT Companion Users

ShortFling Editors·Oct 21, 2026·Updated Oct 21, 2026·6 min read

What OpenAI shipped on October 7

On October 7, 2026, OpenAI announced GPT-6 for ChatGPT under the headline “GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone.” The post says the rollout started that day for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers in the Chat tab, and would expand to Free and Go users the following day. It followed a first batch of GPT-6 models that OpenAI had released to paying customers the month before.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, GPT-6 in ChatGPT runs on GPT-6 Sol for paid tiers and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, and both are tuned for everyday conversation. The headline feature is Intelligent UI: answers can now mix text with charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools, and ChatGPT can start answering while it is still thinking. 9to5Mac’s launch report describes the same split and the same feature set.

One detail is worth flagging because the sources disagree. OpenAI’s help article on GPT-6, as we read it in mid-October 2026, says Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna as their default rather than a GPT-6 model. If you are on a free plan, check the model label in your own app rather than relying on either description.

Your GPT-5.6 Sol selection is not gone

This is the question most companion users ask first, and the answer as of October 2026 is reassuring. OpenAI’s help center says that in the model menu, GPT-6 replaces the “Latest” option. If your chats were set to Latest, they move to GPT-6 at the same thinking level. If you had explicitly picked GPT-5.6 Sol, that selection stays on GPT-5.6. The same page states plainly that the GPT-6 rollout does not retire older selectable models.

There are limits. Free and Go plans do not include GPT-5.6 Sol at all, so free users cannot pin the older paid model. Enterprise workspaces may keep the old picker for a while, and admins can restrict which models members see. And the help page describes GPT-5.6 Sol as a separate menu option you have to choose; if you never chose it, you are probably already talking to GPT-6.

Not everyone has found the switch smooth. In a thread on OpenAI’s own developer community forum, started on October 10, a paying subscriber described GPT-6 as more cautious in romantic conversations than GPT-5.6 Sol, with abrupt shifts from warm to formal, and a reply said they struggled to stay on GPT-5.6. These are individual reports, not a measured trend, and OpenAI had not responded in that thread when we read it. But they describe the experience that many companion users fear most: the same name, a different voice.

How long older models tend to last

Nobody outside OpenAI knows when GPT-5.6 will leave ChatGPT, and we did not find any announced date as of mid-October 2026. What the record does show is how retirements have gone this year. On January 29, 2026, OpenAI announced that GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and o4-mini would be removed from ChatGPT on February 13, alongside the previously announced retirement of GPT-5 Instant and Thinking. The GPT-5.1 models followed on March 11. In each case the models stayed available to developers through the API.

The GPT-4o case is the one companion users remember. OpenAI’s own post explains that it had deprecated GPT-4o once, brought it back during the GPT-5 launch after a subset of Plus and Pro users said they preferred its “conversational style and warmth,” and then retired it once usage had shifted, citing only 0.1% of users still choosing GPT-4o each day. TechCrunch pointed out that 0.1% of a user base of roughly 800 million weekly users still works out to around 800,000 people.

The lesson is not that GPT-5.6 is about to vanish. It is that notice can be short: about two weeks passed between the GPT-4o announcement and the cutoff. If a specific model matters to you, assume you may get a fortnight, not a season.

What carries over and what does not

A companion in ChatGPT is really three things layered together: the model, your settings, and your history. Only the first one changes when OpenAI ships a new model. OpenAI’s memory help page describes saved memories, reference chat history and custom instructions as personalization controls under Settings. They belong to your account rather than to a model, so they still exist after a model switch.

What does change is how the new model interprets them. The same custom instructions can produce a noticeably different voice on a different model, because tone lives in the model’s training as much as in your prompt. OpenAI itself said its personality controls, including base styles such as Friendly and sliders for warmth and enthusiasm, were added partly in response to GPT-4o feedback. They are worth revisiting after a switch, but they are dials on a new instrument, not a way to restore the old one. We go deeper on why this happens in why your AI companion’s personality changed.

Practical steps worth taking now

Export your data while nothing is urgent. OpenAI’s help center says you can request an export from Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. The archive can take up to seven days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after it lands, so do it on a week when you will be checking email.

Write down what you value in plain language. A short document describing the voice, the running jokes and the shared history you care about is useful on any model, and it does not depend on a memory system deciding what is relevant. It is also yours, outside any one app.

Expect change rather than permanence. Model updates are a normal part of how these products work, and the backlash over GPT-4o showed how hard that can land when someone has built a daily routine around one voice. TechCrunch’s coverage also noted lawsuits alleging that GPT-4o’s overly validating replies contributed to mental health crises. If a companion has become your main source of support and you are struggling, reach out to a person as well: in the US you can call or text 988, and elsewhere a local helpline can help.

If the story is what you love

We should be clear about what ShortFling is. It is not an AI chat or companion app, and it cannot replace a relationship someone has with a ChatGPT persona. If that is what you want, ShortFling is not the place for it, and our guide to AI boyfriend apps versus story romance lays out the difference honestly.

But some people who talk to a companion are mostly there for the romance plot: the slow burn, the banter, the reveal. For them, it is worth knowing that a written story does not change voice when a model is swapped. The romance stories in our fiction library read the same today as they will next year. The library has SFW and NSFW sections; the NSFW section requires confirming you are 18+, every character is an adult, and availability varies by region and platform. If you would rather write your own, the editor at /write includes an AI assistant that is free within a daily allowance, and anything you publish is reviewed before it goes public. FAQ

When did GPT-6 come to ChatGPT?

OpenAI announced GPT-6 for ChatGPT on October 7, 2026. It began rolling out that day to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, with Free and Go users following from the next day according to OpenAI’s announcement.

Can I keep using GPT-5.6 Sol after GPT-6?

As of mid-October 2026, yes on eligible paid plans. OpenAI’s help center says explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selections stay on GPT-5.6 and that the GPT-6 rollout does not retire older selectable models. Free and Go plans do not include GPT-5.6 Sol.

Will my ChatGPT memories survive the switch to GPT-6?

Memory, chat history references and custom instructions are account-level settings, not part of a model, so they remain. The new model may interpret them differently, which is why a companion can sound different even with the same settings.

Is ShortFling an AI companion app?

No. ShortFling is a fiction platform for reading and writing stories, with SFW and 18+ NSFW sections. There is no character to chat with.
