Comparison
Best short drama apps in 2026: ReelShort vs DramaBox vs ShortMax and more (including AI-made dramas)
The big short drama apps look alike from the outside and charge you in nearly the same way, so the real differences are who makes the shows, how much you can watch without paying, and whether a person or a model made what you are watching. We checked six apps against their store listings and dated reporting.
By ShortFling Editorial · Editorial team · Last checked: 2026-10-08
Key takeaways
- Biggest and most established: ReelShort, from Crazy Maple Studio. It makes most of its hits in-house in the U.S. and led Sensor Tower's short drama revenue chart in Q1 2025.
- Closest rival: DramaBox, owned by StoryMatrix. It was a few million dollars behind ReelShort in that quarter and runs on VIP access and in-app purchases.
- Most free watching: ReelShort, ShortMax and GoodShort all say you can earn coins or VIP time through ads, daily check-ins or tasks. All three carry Google Play's "Contains ads" flag.
- Most languages: ReelShort lists 21 interface languages on the App Store and ShortMax lists 19.
- AI-made dramas: My Muse, from HOLYWATER, calls its titles AI series in its store listings. None of the five big apps says it publishes fully AI-generated series or labels them.
- Store ratings: DramaBox, ShortMax and My Muse are 17+ on the U.S. App Store; ReelShort, GoodShort and FlexTV are 12+. All six are rated Teen on Google Play.
The short answer
If you only install one, install ReelShort. It topped Sensor Tower's Q1 2025 revenue chart for overseas short drama apps, and it makes its own English-language shows, which bring in most of its revenue. DramaBox is the one to try second. ShortMax and GoodShort are worth a look if you plan to watch through ads rather than pay. If you are curious what a fully AI-made vertical series looks like, My Muse is the clearest example we could verify.[4][8]
Underneath, they are built the same way. On ReelShort, a series runs in one- to two-minute episodes. The first few are free, and after that you pay per episode or buy a pass. The other apps list the same mix of coins, VIP or subscriptions, and ads, so the free part of any series ends sooner than you would like.[4]
How we compared them
We picked the five apps that come up most in searches for short drama apps, then added one app built around AI-generated series. For each one we checked the same six things on 8 October 2026:
- Owner: the seller named on the store listing, plus the parent company where a dated press or company source names it.
- How you pay: the model only (free episodes, coins, subscription or VIP, ads). Prices vary by region and change often, so we leave them out.
- Store content rating: the U.S. App Store age rating and the Google Play rating.
- Languages: the interface languages listed on the U.S. App Store.
- AI-made series: only counted when the app or its owner says so. An AI recommendation feed does not count.
- Scale: downloads or revenue, only with a dated source such as Sensor Tower, a store install band or a press report.
We did not rank the stories themselves. Taste in melodrama is personal, and a catalog of thousands of titles changes every week.
ReelShort
ReelShort was launched in 2022 by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company that TechCrunch described as part of COL Group's portfolio. The store listings name the seller as New Leaf Publishing.[1][3][4]
- How you pay: the first few episodes are free; after that you pay per episode or buy a weekly or monthly pass. On iOS, an active subscription lets you watch all series.[1][4]
- Free route: in public replies on its Google Play listing, ReelShort points viewers to free reward coins earned through daily check-ins and watching ads.[2]
- Ratings: 12+ on the U.S. App Store, Teen on Google Play. Google Play flags both ads and in-app purchases.[1][2]
- Languages: 21 interface languages listed on the App Store.[1]
- Scale: about $130 million in in-app revenue in Q1 2025, first among overseas short drama apps (Sensor Tower). In June 2026 Deadline reported around 70 million monthly active users and more than 286 million downloads, citing the company.[4][8]
- Catalog: about 600 in-house shows and around 4,000 licensed titles, with more than 90% of revenue coming from the in-house titles (Deadline, June 2026).[4]
On AI, founder Joey Jia told Deadline that AI tools had cut the company's costs by around 90% over the past year. He also said he plans to keep human actors and writers and uses AI for pre-visualization, sets, backgrounds and compositing. ReelShort's listings do not say whether AI-assisted titles are labeled.[4]
DramaBox
DramaBox's store seller is STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD., and 36Kr reports that the app belongs to Beijing-based Dianzhong Technology. The App Store lists it as released in April 2023.[5][7]
- How you pay: the app is free to use, but its Google Play description says some content and features need VIP access or in-app purchases. VIP includes ad-free viewing where available. On iOS, VIP is an auto-renewing subscription.[5][6]
- Ratings: 17+ on the U.S. App Store, which cites frequent or intense mature and suggestive themes. Teen on Google Play, which flags ads and in-app purchases.[5][6]
- Languages: 16 interface languages listed on the App Store.[5]
- Scale: about $120 million in in-app revenue in Q1 2025, second only to ReelShort (Sensor Tower). Its Google Play listing shows 100M+ installs.[6][8]
- AI-made series: not stated.
ShortMax
ShortMax is sold by SHORTTV LIMITED on the App Store and SHORTMAX LIMITED on Google Play. EqualOcean names Jiuzhou Culture as the company behind it and dates the launch to September 2023.[9][10][11]
- How you pay: episodes are unlocked with coins. In public replies on Google Play, ShortMax says you can watch for free by watching ads or completing daily tasks in its Rewards section to earn coins. Google Play flags ads and in-app purchases.[10]
- Ratings: 17+ on the U.S. App Store and Teen on Google Play.[9][10]
- Languages: the Google Play description claims 50,000+ titles in 19 languages, and the App Store lists 19 interface languages.[9][10]
- Scale: 100M+ installs on Google Play. We found no dated revenue figure from Sensor Tower or Appfigures.[10]
- AI-made series: not stated. The listing mentions AI recommendations, which is a different thing.[10]
GoodShort
GoodShort's App Store seller is SINGAPORE NEW READING TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD. On Google Play, the developer is listed as GoodNovel, the same name as the web-novel app. We did not find a dated primary source naming the parent company, so we leave that blank.[12][13]
- How you pay: VIP lets you watch premium dramas free of charge and without ads, and daily check-ins earn points that extend VIP. On iOS, premium membership renews automatically. Google Play flags ads and in-app purchases.[12][13]
- Ratings: 12+ on the U.S. App Store and Teen on Google Play.[12][13]
- Languages: 14 interface languages listed on the App Store.[12]
- Scale: 50M+ installs on Google Play.[13]
- AI-made series: not stated. Like ShortMax, it advertises AI recommendations only.[13]
FlexTV
FlexTV is run by Yuder Pte. Ltd. of Singapore. In August 2024, Mega Matrix Corp., which is listed on NYSE American, said it had bought the rest of Yuder's parent, FunVerse, and now owns 100% of it. The same release says FlexTV makes original English and Thai dramas and translates them for viewers in Europe, America and Southeast Asia.[14][16]
- How you pay: auto-renewing subscriptions on iOS, plus in-app purchases and ads according to Google Play's flags. The listings do not explain how the coin system works.[14][15]
- Ratings: 12+ on the U.S. App Store and Teen on Google Play.[14][15]
- Languages: 15 interface languages listed on the App Store.[14]
- Scale: 10M+ installs on Google Play.[15]
- AI-made series: not stated.
My Muse (AI-made series)
My Muse is the AI-series app of HOLYWATER, the Ukraine-founded company behind the My Drama vertical streaming app. HOLYWATER's own website links to the My Muse store listings, which name the seller as Zereli Limited. The listings call the app "AI Series" on the App Store and "Stream AI Short Drama" on Google Play. That makes it the only app here that labels its catalog as AI-made.[17][18][19]
- How you pay: coins, with a new-user coin bonus and daily rewards. The listing also links to subscription terms. Google Play flags in-app purchases but not ads.[17][18]
- Ratings: 17+ on the U.S. App Store and Teen on Google Play.[17][18]
- Languages: English only on the App Store.[17]
- Scale: 500K+ installs on Google Play, much smaller than the rest. Google Cloud's customer story credits its AI production pipeline with 10x ARR growth for My Muse.[18][21]
HOLYWATER describes My Muse as human-led writing and direction, with generative AI used to speed up production.[20]

AI-made short dramas: what is different
In China, AI production is already the norm. CNBC, citing estimates from the China Netcasting Services Association, reported that about 128,000 short dramas were released in China in the first quarter of 2026 and that more than 95% of them were AI.[22]
Google Cloud's customer story on HOLYWATER describes what such a pipeline looks like. Gemini-based agents read a source book and build a production bible covering characters, outfits and locations. Image models draw the storyboards, and Veo generates the final video. Google says each creative unit, an AI creator working with a video editor, now turns out 10 times more minutes of finished video a month. It also says a series is made eight times faster than traditional vertical production, and a hit book can become a video adaptation in under a month.[21]
For viewers, that means more fantasy and horror, which cost a lot to shoot live, and a much faster flow of new titles. The trade-off is that you often cannot tell how a show was made. Apart from My Muse's store name, none of the listings we checked says whether a title is AI-generated. Live-action studios are not avoiding the tools either. ReelShort uses AI for sets and compositing while keeping human writers and actors.[4][17][18]
Which is right for you
- You want the most popular English-language originals: ReelShort.[4]
- You want a large second catalog and do not mind a VIP model: DramaBox.[6]
- You plan to watch through ads and daily tasks rather than pay: start with ShortMax or GoodShort, then compare how far the free coins or VIP points get you.[10][13]
- You want the app in a language other than English: ReelShort or ShortMax list the most interface languages.[1][9]
- You want to see what AI-made vertical drama looks like: My Muse.[17]
On every one of these apps, check the pay screen before you start a long series. A 70-episode season with only a few free episodes adds up quickly.
Where ShortFling fits: ShortFling is web-first, and its iOS and Android apps are not out yet. Twelve vertical short dramas are in production, but none can be watched yet. When they launch, the first episode will be free and later episodes will cost coins or need VIP. Fiction is live now: 258 stories, with early chapters free and later chapters available with coins or VIP. Most of those stories sit in a separate NSFW zone where visitors confirm they are 18+ and every character is an adult.
If you want romance with a plot while the dramas are still being made, browse the fiction library or the 18+ NSFW stories. The drama catalog is marked coming soon. If you came here from AI chat apps, our explainer on AI boyfriend apps vs story romance covers how the two experiences differ.
Frequently asked questions
Is ReelShort or DramaBox better?
They are close. ReelShort made slightly more in-app revenue in Q1 2025 (about $130 million vs about $120 million, per Sensor Tower) and makes most of its hits in-house in the U.S. DramaBox is rated 17+ on the U.S. App Store, while ReelShort is rated 12+. Both use free first episodes followed by paid access.
Are there free short drama apps?
None of the big ones is fully free. ReelShort, ShortMax and GoodShort let you earn coins or VIP time through ads, daily check-ins or tasks, so you can watch without paying, but slowly. Google Play flags all three as containing ads.
What are some apps like ReelShort?
DramaBox, ShortMax, GoodShort and FlexTV use the same format: vertical one- to two-minute episodes, free openers, then coins, VIP or a subscription. My Muse uses the same format with AI-made series.
Are AI-generated short dramas labeled?
Mostly not, as of October 2026. My Muse calls its titles AI series in its store listings. We found no labeling policy for AI-made titles on ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, GoodShort or FlexTV.
Can I watch short dramas on ShortFling?
Not yet. Twelve dramas are in production and none is watchable today. ShortFling's fiction, including an 18+ NSFW zone where every character is an adult, is live now.
