Does Wattpad allow NSFW? The Mature rules, explained

Wattpad’s Content Guidelines say the platform allows “a wide range of creative expression, including mature and challenging topics”, but removes content that is “created primarily for sexual arousal”. In practice, that means a romance with explicit scenes can stay up, while a story that exists only for the sex scenes can be taken down.[1]

Wattpad’s help center says the same thing more bluntly: publishing pornography is against its Code of Conduct, and a story with adult content that does not cross that line must be rated Mature.[3]

The sexual-content section of the guidelines sorts material into three groups.[1]

Wattpad says it has zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation material and may report suspected cases to law enforcement worldwide. Its list of illegal sex acts names bestiality, necrophilia and incest, among others.[1]

Covers and images are held to a stricter standard than text. The guidelines ban explicit sexual imagery and nudity in a sexual context. The help center says every image uploaded to a story is reviewed by a mix of technology and human moderators, and that a Mature rating does not exempt a story’s images from the rules.[1][9]

Real person fiction is allowed, but Wattpad removes it if it involves non-consensual sexual content, private information, targeted harassment or non-consensual AI deepfakes.[1]

• Writers choose the rating themselves. The guidelines say all creators must rate their stories appropriately, as either Everyone or Mature (17+).[1]
• A story may be rated Mature for explicit sex scenes, for self-harm themes (including suicide and eating disorders), or for graphic violence, including abuse.[2]
• Mature stories are harder to come across. Suggestive images are hidden from users under 17 and from anyone browsing without logging in.[2]
• Readers can switch Mature stories on or off in Content Preferences. The setting covers the home feed and search, and the Include Mature option does not appear for underage users.[4]
• If you think a story should be rated Mature and is not, the help center asks you to report it.[3]

The rating is a label, not a permission slip. Wattpad’s guidelines say that even a story marked Mature is removed if it contains prohibited content.

You must be at least 13 to use Wattpad at all, and Wattpad says it closes accounts it learns belong to someone younger.[7]

Mature content is labeled 17+. Wattpad’s parent guidance says entering a correct date of birth keeps under-17 users from seeing Mature content, because the Mature filter option does not appear for them. The guidelines add that the age for Mature content can be higher in some regions, giving 18+ as an example, and that users must follow their local laws.[1][5]

Note the difference between the reader age and the character age. Readers aged 17 can open Mature stories, but explicit scenes are only allowed between consenting adults aged 18 or over.[1]

Under the enforcement section of its guidelines, Wattpad may remove or restrict content, change a story’s rating, temporarily restrict or close accounts, and report illegal activity to the authorities.[1]

The help center says reported stories and accounts are investigated and that only content that broke Wattpad’s policies is removed. It also states that “Wattpad’s decision is final and irreversible”, and that marking a story Mature or adding a trigger warning does not protect prohibited content. Filing false or repeated duplicate reports can itself lead to restrictions or suspension.[6]

• February 2020: Wattpad added feed controls, including an “Include Mature” option and blocked tags. TechCrunch reported at the time that users under 17 could not switch Mature content on.[12]
• August 10, 2026: Wattpad published rewritten Content Guidelines. The current page carries that “Last Revised” date.[1][11]
• Soon after, Wattpad posted “Same policies, more clarity”. It says the rules were reworded and reorganized, with examples to separate Everyone from Mature, but that its policies, product, content categories and moderation “have not changed”. It also says steamy stories are “still welcome”.[8]
• Users still worried that smut had been banned. Book Riot reported on August 25, 2026 that the “pornographic content” wording alarmed readers and writers, that some moved to Archive of Our Own, and that it was unclear how the rules would be enforced.[10]

The upshot is that explicit scenes between adults are still allowed when they are rated Mature and sit inside a real story. What the new wording makes explicit is that sex-first content, sexual roleplay and anything involving minors are outside the rules.[1][8]

For story-first romance with some explicit scenes, Wattpad still works: rate it Mature, keep every character in those scenes an adult and let the plot carry the book. If the heat is the point of the story, pick a platform built for that rather than working around Wattpad’s rules.

For fan fiction, Archive of Our Own uses a different system of ratings and archive warnings, explained in our guide to AO3 ratings and warnings. For a wider look at platforms that accept adult fiction, see where to publish erotica online.

ShortFling is a fiction platform with separate SFW and NSFW zones. ShortFling Fiction asks you to confirm you are 18+ before you enter the NSFW zone, and every character there is an adult. If you write, the writing page has an AI editor that helps you draft chapter by chapter. You pick a zone for each story, sign a creator agreement (original work, all characters adults, no sexual content about real people), and publish by submitting for review. A story goes public once it is approved. ShortFling is not an AI chat app.
