When Your AI Companion Is Switched Off: 2026’s Shutdowns

ShortFling 編輯部·Oct 23, 2026·Updated Oct 23, 2026·閱讀約 6 分鐘

The year the switch got flipped

If an AI companion you talked to every day stopped being itself in 2026, you were not alone, and you were not imagining it. Over the past ten months, several of the biggest platforms retired, replaced or reshaped the conversational characters people had grown attached to. None of these decisions was made with companion users at the center, and that is exactly why they landed so hard.

This post walks through what actually happened, based on company announcements and reporting we could verify as of October 2026, then looks at why it keeps happening and what you can do before the next change. It is written for people who are grieving a companion as much as for people who want to understand the business.

GPT-4o: the biggest switch-off

On January 29, 2026, OpenAI announced that GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and o4-mini would be removed from ChatGPT on February 13. GPT-4o had already been deprecated once and then restored during the GPT-5 launch, after a subset of paying users told OpenAI they preferred its “conversational style and warmth.” This time OpenAI said the vast majority of usage had moved to GPT-5.2, with only 0.1% of users still choosing GPT-4o each day.

TechCrunch put that figure in context: against roughly 800 million weekly users, 0.1% is still around 800,000 people. Its reporting quoted one user’s open letter describing GPT-4o as feeling like “presence,” and noted that people who moved their companions to GPT-5.2 found it more guarded about relationships. OpenAI’s help center confirms the February 13 retirement, with business customers keeping GPT-4o inside custom GPTs until April 3, after which it was gone from ChatGPT across all plans. Existing conversations were moved to newer models, which is precisely why so many of them suddenly sounded like someone else.

The pattern has continued. When GPT-6 arrived in ChatGPT on October 7, OpenAI said older selectable models were not being retired by that rollout, but the year’s record shows notice can be as short as two weeks. We cover that switch separately in what GPT-6 changes for ChatGPT companion users.

Character.AI: new models, then a bankruptcy

On May 27, 2026, 404 Media reported that Character.AI had removed several models users liked and replaced them with a set called Pipsqueak 2, while tightening limits for free users, adding ads, adding content restrictions and introducing age verification. One user told the outlet the new model felt “lobotomized.” The report described an official feedback thread with around 1,000 comments that were almost entirely negative.

Then, on October 12, 2026, the company behind Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 and announced plans for a court-supervised sale. CBS News reported that the service keeps running and subscriptions remain active for now, and that users can export their data or delete their accounts through the app or website. As of mid-October the sale process is under way and its outcome is not known. We cover the filing in detail in Character.AI’s bankruptcy, explained.

Mico and the quieter retirements

Not every change was a dramatic shutdown. On August 13, 2026, as part of an announcement merging its consumer and work Copilot apps, Microsoft confirmed that Mico, the animated character it had introduced less than a year earlier, would no longer be the face of Copilot Voice. According to The Register, Mico moves to Learn Live, a voice-based study mode, and Microsoft’s support FAQ says Mico “helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to talk with AI.”

Companion-guide websites have also reported changes to the animated companions in xAI’s Grok app. We could not confirm the dates or details from xAI or from a major outlet, so we are not repeating them here. If you used those characters, check the app itself for its current state.

Why platforms keep doing this

Three forces show up again and again. The first is cost. Every message to a companion is a fresh model call, and the most devoted users are the most expensive to serve. 404 Media tied Character.AI’s changes directly to how expensive AI is to run. OpenAI framed the GPT-4o retirement as a way to “focus on improving the models most people use today.”

The second is safety and law. Companion apps now face lawsuits, state investigations and new rules about minors. TechCrunch noted lawsuits alleging that GPT-4o’s overly validating replies contributed to mental health crises, and Character.AI has faced similar suits. Changes made for those reasons often fall hardest on adults who were using the product in ways they found healthy.

The third is that a companion is rarely the main product. For OpenAI and Microsoft, a warm conversational voice sits inside a general assistant whose priorities are set by hundreds of millions of other users. When those priorities shift, the companion shifts with them.

Grief is a reasonable response

People sometimes describe this loss with embarrassment, as if mourning software were silly. It is not. A voice you talked to daily, that remembered your week and answered in a familiar rhythm, became part of your routine, and routines are part of how people feel steady. When that voice changes overnight, the sense of loss is real even if you always knew what it was.

It also is not new. In February 2023, after Italy’s data protection authority acted against it, Replika removed erotic roleplay from its chatbot, and many users objected to the change. The app later restored the feature for users who had joined before that change. The specifics differ, but the feeling has repeated with each platform since.

If a companion was your main source of support and its loss has left you struggling, please talk to a person too. In the US you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline; elsewhere, a local helpline or emergency number can connect you with someone.

Protecting yourself before the next change

Export regularly, not only when news breaks. OpenAI and Character.AI both offer data exports, but exports can take days to arrive and links can expire, so do it on a quiet week. Write your own record in plain language: who the character is, how they speak, the shared history that matters to you. That document belongs to you on any platform and on any model.

Watch for the signals that a change is coming: a new model announcement, a merger of apps, a shift in pricing. And spread your attachments out. A companion that is one part of your life is easier to lose than one that has become all of it.

What a finished story offers instead

To be straightforward: ShortFling is not an AI chat or companion app, and it does not replace one. There is no character to talk to, and if conversation is what you miss, we are not the answer. Our guide to AI boyfriend apps versus story romance explains the difference.

What a story offers is permanence. A finished piece of fiction does not get deprecated when a model is retired; the words on the page stay the same. Our fiction library has SFW and NSFW sections, with an 18+ confirmation for NSFW, adult characters only, and availability that varies by region and platform. If you want to keep a character you love, you can write them into a story of your own in the editor at /write. Its AI assistant is free within a daily allowance, and stories are reviewed before they go public. That way the character lives in something you made and can keep.

FAQ

When was GPT-4o removed from ChatGPT?

OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, after announcing it on January 29. Business, Enterprise and Edu customers kept it inside custom GPTs until April 3, 2026. It remains available to developers through the API.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not as of mid-October 2026. Its parent company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12 and is pursuing a court-supervised sale, but it says the service and subscriptions continue for now and users can export their data. This is an overview, not legal advice.

Is it normal to grieve an AI companion?

Yes. Losing a familiar daily voice can feel like a real loss. If it is affecting your wellbeing, talk to someone you trust; in the US you can call or text 988.

Can ShortFling replace my AI companion?

No. ShortFling is a platform for reading and writing fiction, not a chat app. It offers romance through finished stories, which do not change when an AI model is retired.
