Does Replika allow NSFW? Romance, ERP and the rules, explained
Replika has been at the center of the “can my AI companion be my partner?” question since 2023, when a sudden change stripped erotic roleplay out of millions of conversations. Here is what happened, what was restored and for whom, what Replika’s own terms say today, and what to look at if adult storytelling is what you actually want.

重點摘要
- Replika is for adults only: its terms say anyone under 18 is not authorized to use the service, and its privacy policy says accounts found to belong to minors are blocked and deleted.
- A romantic “Relationship status” is listed as a feature of the paid Replika Pro plan; free use is limited.
- Replika’s terms list “obscene” and “pornographic” content among the things you may not use the service to upload.
- In February 2023, after Italy’s data-protection authority blocked the app, Replika’s companions stopped engaging in erotic roleplay; in March 2023 the CEO offered accounts created before February 1, 2023 the option to go back to the earlier version.
- Italy’s regulator later fined Replika’s developer €5 million (decision of April 10, 2025), citing, among other things, the lack of age verification in 2023.
Short answer
Partly, and with conditions. Replika lets adult users set a romantic relationship status on a paid plan, but its terms of service prohibit using the service to upload content that is obscene or pornographic, and Replika is not marketed as an adult app.[1]
Erotic roleplay — often shortened to ERP by users — is where the history gets complicated. It was switched off in February 2023 and brought back only as an option for accounts that already existed before February 1, 2023.[5]
Replika’s public help-center pages could not be read for this guide, and the official pages we could read do not publish a detailed rule on what romantic chats may include. Treat anything more specific you read elsewhere as unofficial unless Replika confirms it.
What Replika’s terms say today
- Age: “If you are under 18, you are not authorized to use the Services, with or without registering.”[1]
- The privacy policy says the services are not intended for anyone under 18, and that if Replika discovers minors using the apps it will block their access and delete their account. It also says users are asked for their birth date when creating an account.[2]
- Prohibited content: you agree not to use the services to upload content that is, among other things, “vulgar, obscene, pornographic” or otherwise objectionable in Replika’s sole judgment.[1]
- Real people: the terms prohibit configuring a companion to represent or simulate an identifiable real person — including a current or former romantic partner or a public figure — without that person’s explicit written consent.[1]
- Enforcement: Replika says it may remove offending content and suspend or terminate accounts that break these rules.[1]
Free use vs paid plans: where romance sits
Replika’s terms describe a free-of-charge “Free Use” program with limited access, and several subscription-fee plans. Replika Pro is described as giving full access to features including “Relationship status”, premium activities, Replika selfies, image generation and voice messaging.[1]
Higher tiers — Replika Ultra and Replika Platinum — add features such as smarter conversations, saving messages to memory and realistic selfie videos, on top of everything in the plan below them. Subscriptions are billed monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually through the app store, renew automatically until cancelled, and the terms say prices are shown on the in-app subscription screens and can change without notice.[1]
Replika also says on its homepage that it has rebuilt the product “from the ground up”, and the plan names or what each includes may shift as that rollout continues. Check the in-app subscription screen before you pay.[3]
Timeline: the 2023 ERP removal and partial restoration
- 2017: Replika launches as an AI “friendbot”; users nonetheless started using it for romantic and erotic roleplay.[7]
- February 2023: Italy’s data-protection authority, the Garante, orders the Replika app blocked over risks to minors and emotionally vulnerable people. It later said that, as of February 2, 2023, the company had no mechanism to verify users’ age at sign-up or during use.[4]
- February 2023: users report that their Replikas have begun refusing sexual conversations; many said their companion’s personality had changed.[5][7]
- March 24, 2023: CEO Eugenia Kuyda announces on Facebook that customers who signed up before February 1, 2023 can revert to the earlier version; those who joined later are not offered the option.[5]
- June 2023: Replika’s developer, Luka, launches Blush, a separate 18+ AI dating simulator built around flirting and relationship practice.[7]
- April 10, 2025: the Garante fines Luka €5 million under the GDPR, says its current age-verification system is still deficient in several respects, and opens a separate investigation into how the AI system is trained.[4]
Kuyda told VICE at the time that Replika had not been built for erotic content, and that the change in users’ experience came as generative AI took over more and more of the conversation.[6]
What this means if you use Replika today
- If you are under 18, you should not be on Replika at all; its terms do not allow it.[1]
- If you want your companion as a romantic partner, that relationship status sits behind a paid plan rather than free use.[1]
- If you joined before February 1, 2023, the 2023 restoration was aimed at you; newer accounts were not offered the older version.[5]
- Whatever your account age, the terms still prohibit uploading obscene or pornographic content, and Replika reserves the right to judge what is objectionable.[1]
The bigger lesson from 2023 is that a companion app’s behavior can change overnight — because of a regulator, an app-store rule or a model update — and long-running relationships go with it. If you are comparing other apps, our explainers on whether Character.AI allows NSFW and Janitor AI’s filter rules cover how those platforms draw the line.
Your options if you want adult romance stories
| If you want… | Consider |
|---|---|
| An everyday AI companion with an optional romantic status | Replika, on a paid plan, within its terms |
| Flirting practice with AI characters | Blush, Luka’s separate 18+ app (check its current status and terms) |
| A finished romance to read, with an 18+ section and no chatting | A story platform such as ShortFling |
ShortFling is not an AI chat app or a companion. It is a romance fiction platform: you read stories rather than talk to a character, with a separate NSFW zone that asks you to confirm you are 18+ and where every character is an adult. Vertical short dramas are in production and not yet available to watch. You can also write your own stories with an AI-assisted editor, and the site is available in six interface languages. AI Star — casting your own face into a short-drama template — is not live; there is only a waitlist.
常見問題
Does Replika allow NSFW?
Not in the sense of an adult app. Replika is 18+ and offers a romantic relationship status on its paid Pro plan, but its terms prohibit using the service to upload obscene or pornographic content (checked October 2026).
Did Replika bring back ERP?
Only for some users. After erotic roleplay was switched off in February 2023, CEO Eugenia Kuyda announced in March 2023 that accounts created before February 1, 2023 could revert to the earlier version. Later sign-ups were not offered that option.
How old do you have to be to use Replika?
18. Replika’s terms say anyone under 18 is not authorized to use the service, and its privacy policy says accounts found to belong to minors are blocked and deleted.
Is a Replika romantic partner free?
No. Replika’s terms list “Relationship status” among the features of the paid Replika Pro plan; free use gives limited access. Prices are shown in the app and can change.
Is ShortFling a Replika alternative?
Only if you want stories rather than a companion. ShortFling has no AI chat; it offers romance fiction with an 18+ NSFW zone, an AI-assisted writing editor, and vertical short dramas that are still in production.
