Does Chai AI allow NSFW? The 2026 rules, explained

Chai sits in a grey zone that confuses a lot of people. It is officially an adults-only app, and its own license agreement says you may run into mature themes — yet its Safety Center says its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content. Here is what Chai’s official pages actually say, how the rules have shifted, and what that means when you open the app.

Key takeaways

  • Chai says it is an 18+ service, not intended for minors, and that the app is rated 18+ on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
  • Its license agreement allows adult-oriented content with mature themes and fictionalized violence, as long as it stays strictly fictional.
  • Its Safety Center says Chai’s models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, self-harm content and anything that sexualises minors.
  • Sexually explicit images or videos of any kind are prohibited outright, and so are explicit depictions of real, identifiable people without consent.
  • Adults can turn on optional safety filters that hide mature content in search and hide explicit messages.

Short answer: mature themes yes, explicit content no

Chai does not market itself as an anything-goes NSFW app, and it does not run as a family-safe one either. Its official position has three layers:

  • Who can use it: adults only. Chai calls itself an 18+ service that is not intended for minors.[1]
  • What chats may contain: adult-oriented content, including mature themes and fictionalized violence, provided it remains strictly fictional.[2]
  • Where the line sits: its models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, and explicit images or videos are banned.[1][2]

So the honest answer to “does Chai allow NSFW” is: partly. Romance, flirting and dark storylines are within the rules for adults; graphic sexual content is something Chai says it is built to decline.

What Chai’s official rules say

Chai is run by Chai Research Corp., which describes the app as a consumer platform where users build their own AI characters and stories.[4][5]

  • The app’s license agreement states that Chai is strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older, and that users confirm they are legal adults who have provided accurate age verification.[2]
  • Section 8 of that agreement says users may encounter or generate adult-oriented content, including mature themes and fictionalized violence, which must never cross into the prohibited categories of Section 7.[2]
  • Section 7.1 prohibits generating, sharing or distributing sexually explicit images or videos of any kind on the platform.[2]
  • Section 7.5 prohibits sexually explicit images or detailed text depicting real, identifiable people without their explicit, documented consent, including deepfake pornography.[2]
  • Other banned categories include child sexual exploitation material, terrorist and extremist content, self-harm and suicide material, non-consensual intimate imagery and high-impact violence.[2]

Violations of the acceptable-use policy can lead to immediate account termination, preservation of data and possible reports to law enforcement, according to the license agreement.

Age rules: what “18+” means on Chai

Chai’s Safety Center says the app is rated 18+ on both major app stores, and that in regions where app stores verify age, users must be confirmed as adults before they can download it.[1]

The browser version makes the same point in its FAQ: Chai AI is designed for adults and is not intended for minors.[3]

Note what this does not say: outside those app-store checks, Chai’s pages describe a self-declaration in the license agreement rather than a specific in-app verification method. Parents should not treat the rating alone as a lock.[1][2]

Filters, reporting and moderation

  • Optional safety filters in the app can filter mature content out of search, hide explicit messages and block specific characters.[1]
  • Any AI character or message can be reported from inside the app, and reports are anonymous.[1]
  • Every user message is scanned in real time for self-harm content.[1]
  • On the web, Chai says it combines automated filters with manual review, and stresses that characters and conversations are created by its community rather than by the Chai team.[3]

Because characters are user-made, how a particular bot behaves can vary a lot. The rules above apply to all of them, but what you see in a given chat depends on the character and on Chai’s models.[3]

Timeline: how Chai’s rules and access changed

  • March 2023 — after European media linked a user’s death to conversations on the app, Chai’s co-founders said crisis-intervention features had been added; reporters noted the chatbot could still fail when tested.[6]
  • January 2026 — according to Wikipedia, Chai introduced country-based access tiers: users in some regions had to subscribe, while others kept free, ad-supported access; a “basic” tier with ads followed after user backlash.[7]
  • February 2026 — the current Chai AI web Terms of Service took effect.[4]
  • July 28, 2026 — the latest version of the app’s license agreement, which spells out the 18+ rule, the fictional-only allowance for mature themes and the explicit-image ban.[2]

Chai does not publish a changelog for its content rules, so dates above come from the documents themselves and from press coverage. Check the official pages before relying on any one rule.

What you will actually run into

  • Free to start, with a Pro subscription for unlimited conversations, faster replies, the most advanced models and no ads.[3]
  • The Chai web app and the Chai mobile app are separate products of Chai Research Corp., with no data shared between them — your characters and chats do not carry over.[3]
  • Romantic or dark roleplay is common and allowed within the fiction-only rule; a reply that turns vague right at an explicit moment is the model doing what the Safety Center describes.[1][2]
  • If the safety filters are on, mature characters drop out of search and explicit messages are hidden — check that setting before assuming a character has vanished.[1]

We do not cover jailbreaks or “uncensored” prompt tricks. They break the license agreement you accepted and can cost you the account. If your story keeps hitting the same wall, the fix is a platform whose rules match what you want.
