[Her - the Heroine]
Forty minutes before the gym closed, the place had all but emptied out. I finished my last set of hip thrusts, sweat soaking my sports bra until it could be wrung out, clinging to me and tracing the shape of my chest. The woman in the full-length mirror, flushed all over, eyes gone hazy, was me — everyone who knows me knows I am no proper girl. I take what I want, walk away when I am bored, and never lock myself into anything. But the piece of "meat" I had my eye on tonight was built so big that my usual easy confidence went a little hollow inside.
[Him - the Foreign Athlete]
I was wrapping up in the free-weight area, sliding the plates off one by one and stacking them neatly, a habit years of competition had drilled into me. The late-night gym in this foreign country was quiet enough that all that remained was the low hum of the air conditioning and the soft click of metal. That Eastern girl had already circled past me three times, using the pretext of drinking water, stretching, adjusting a machine — and each route cut precisely through my line of sight. The veins on my bronze forearms rose and fell with every movement. I knew she was watching, and I knew she thought I had not noticed. Let her grow a little more impatient; the impatient one always strikes first — that much patience the arena taught me better than it teaches anyone.
[Her - the Heroine]
The locker room was the one at the end of the shared corridor, the men and women divided only by a single row of lockers. I slowed on purpose, waiting for him to come in with his towel too. The metallic clang of a locker door opening and shutting rang unusually loud in the empty space. With my back to him, I peeled my soaked sports bra up from the hem, taking my time — my spine bared inch by inch, my shoulder blades jutting out. I know that line of my back is beautiful. Halfway out of the bra, I "absentmindedly" half-turned so he could see, in the mirror, the curve of the side of my breast and the loose strands of my hair falling down.
[Him - the Foreign Athlete]
That half-bared body in the mirror was dazzlingly pale, beads of sweat sliding down the groove of her spine. She thought it was a heavy blow; to my eyes it looked more like an invitation held out to me — written too plainly, and so a little less interesting for it. I did not look away, and I did not step forward. I just kept slowly wiping the back of my neck with the towel, letting the silence pull the air tighter and tighter. She was waiting for my breathing to fall apart. But the one who falls apart should always be the one who spoke first.
[Her - the Heroine]
I turned all the way around, bare from the waist up, facing him, my chest rising and falling. At a moment like this a man should have pounced long ago; I have seen it too many times. But he simply stood there, sweat still hanging on his bronze chest, his gaze so calm that something in me snapped taut with a twang. An unfamiliar heat crept up from my lower belly — damn it, why am I the one who lost my nerve first? So I laid it out plainly, softening my voice, carrying that wet little hook I always use: "Do you want me to… use my mouth to help you relax? I am very good at it."
[Him - the Foreign Athlete]
She spoke. Her voice was soft as if it had been steeped in warm water, her eyes full of a certainty that said, "You cannot escape me." Good — the invitation was in my hand now. But I chose not to take it. Not because I did not want to; it was that with a girl like this, the more you give her what she wants, the more easily she turns around and leaves. Keeping her dangling, making her crawl over and beg on her own, is the way to truly close the initiative in your fist. I curled the corner of my mouth and said each word deliberately: "I have rules. On a first meeting, I do not accept this kind of thing."
[Her - the Heroine]
"I have rules" — those words came down and my mind buzzed. Being refused was something I had almost never experienced, especially not after I had spelled it out that far. Shame and resentment burned my earlobes red in an instant, but the worst part was this — down there had somehow only grown hotter, my panties a slick, sticky mess. My reason cursed at myself for being a wretch, yet my body was honest in a way that made me furious: the more he held himself back, the more he withheld, the more that thought inside me — I have to have him — grew wild. So this was what it felt like, to be strung along like this.
[Him - the Foreign Athlete]
Watching her face move from shock to resentment, and then to that unquenchable wetness at the bottom of her eyes, I knew the fire was already lit. I pushed a key card with the name of a hotel written on it onto the bench, then turned to go shower, leaving her a single line over my shoulder: "Once you have thought it through tomorrow night, come to me yourself. I do not like to make do in a place like this." Before the water started running, I heard her standing there, not moving for the longest time — and that stretch of silence convinced me, more than any moan could have, that she would come.
[Her - the Heroine]
He stepped into the shower stall, the rushing water drowning out everything. I stared at the key card on the bench, my chest still bare, my heart pounding as if I had just run an interval sprint. I could pick it up, or I could turn and walk out, proving I was not so easy to command. But my hand closed around the card a step ahead of me. My fingertips pressed against that thin little slip, and I heard myself concede defeat inside — tomorrow night, I would definitely go. And I knew perfectly well what would happen once I did.
