Chapter 1The Good Girl’s Late-Night Screen

【She · Good Girl】

Her coworkers all called her the kind of girl who, if you set her in the corner of a meeting room, could stay so quiet everyone would forget she was even there. Twenty-six, working in admin at a mid-sized company, she spoke in a soft, gentle voice, always wrote “thank you for your hard work” in her delivery-order notes, and would hesitate forever over whether she should accept even the little slice of sausage a supermarket sample lady eagerly held out to her. Nobody knew that a person like this, at two in the morning, would switch off every light, leaving only the cold blue glow of the screen on her face, and curl her body up like a startled shrimp.

What she opened was never any of that tender, sweet-hearted stuff. Her bookmarks were full of things she could never show to anyone — fantasy scripts about wrists being bound, about being pressed down and disciplined, about being cornered step by step until every defense fell away. She did not truly want to be treated that way; she knew perfectly well it was only a shell, a shell she could hide inside to let herself go. What really tightened her lower belly, what made her bury her face in the pillow and moan, was the feeling of what she should not — should not watch, should not want, should not have. The more forbidden it was, the more honestly her body welled up with heat.

Her daytime restraint and her late-night greed were like two people living inside the same body, each despising the other. Once the sun came up she put on her crisply ironed blouse as usual, tied her hair into a meticulous ponytail, and smiled politely at everyone. No one would ever guess that this girl, who did not even dare meet another person’s eyes in the elevator, had just last night been biting her pillow, imagining herself being peeled open inch by inch by a stranger’s hands.

That year, for her best friend’s birthday, she was dragged out clubbing. She had wanted to refuse; a place like that was too loud, too bright, too naked for her. But her friend said, just come keep me company, you are going to grow mold shut up at home every day. Unable to win the argument, she changed into a black dress she normally kept buried at the bottom of a drawer, its neckline cut lower than her own courage, and went along.

Her friend had brought her boyfriend too. The man was better-looking than she had imagined — broad-shouldered, with a slightly roguish crease at the corners of his eyes when he smiled, and as he stood beside her friend, casually brushing the hair away from her face, the practiced ease of the gesture told anyone at a glance that this was a man who was taken. It was that single glance that made her heart jump for no reason she could name. Not because he was handsome — because he belonged to someone else. The moment that thought surfaced, she startled even herself, and quickly ducked her head to sip at that cloyingly sweet drink.

【He · Best Friend’s Boyfriend】

Honestly, at first he had barely noticed her at all. His girlfriend’s quiet friend, hunched in the booth the whole time, clutching her glass like a lifeline, blushing the instant anyone spoke to her. He had seen plenty of girls like that — obedient, dull, nothing interesting about them. That night his attention was entirely on his own girlfriend — right up until closing time, when the crowd suddenly surged in.

The lights went out completely, leaving only the bursting beat of the drums and beams of light sweeping back and forth. Body crushed against body, no one could make out anyone. Shoved along by the tide of people, he ended up pressed right behind that quiet friend. He could feel her entire back settle against his chest, and through two thin layers of fabric, that faint scent of hers, so out of place in this smoke-choked den. Instinctively he moved to give way — but just then, he felt it, clear as day: her hand reached back, and her fingertips, faint and fleeting, grazed across his crotch.

【She · Good Girl】

She could hardly believe that hand was hers. The dark gave her a mask, the crowd gave her an excuse — everyone is packed in, who could blame whom? But she knew better than anyone that it had been no accident. When her fingertips grazed that scorching place, its shape unmistakable even through the cloth, her ears rang and all the blood in her body rushed downward. Shame poured over her like a basin of ice water, but right on its heels came a hotter, almost knee-buckling excitement — he was her best friend’s boyfriend. She was secretly touching her best friend’s boyfriend. That realization made her wetter than anything ever had.

She did not stop. Under cover of the crowd, she laid her whole palm over it, and through the fabric felt the thing beneath her hand slowly harden, grow hot, and lift its head. She heard the man behind her draw a ragged breath, yet he did not push her away. And so the two of them, in the deafening music, in the midst of the black mass of the crowd, did a thing neither of them could ever speak aloud. Her heart pounded as if it would burst, while below she had already gone hopelessly, sloppily wet.

【He · Best Friend’s Boyfriend】

His mind went blank with a roar. Reason told him this was his damn girlfriend’s friend, that he should shove her off. But his body would not obey — her technique was clumsy, trembling faintly, and it was exactly that awkwardness, that careful timidity, that went to his head more than any practiced flirtation ever could. He bent his head, leaned to her ear, his voice pressed so low it was nearly swallowed by the drums: want to step out for some air? She did not answer, only drew her hand back, and then, in the dark, he felt her fingers hook faintly around his.

【She · Good Girl】

She could not have said how she followed him out. She only remembered that her friend was being pulled off toward the bar by someone, her back to them, laughing without a shred of suspicion. The taut string inside her snapped halfway with a crack — now, right now, while she is not looking. The guilt that thought brought was as thick as the pleasure, so thick her temples throbbed. She followed him through the fire door, into the deserted stairwell that led down to the underground parking garage.

The cold air jolted half the drink out of her in an instant. The stairwell’s motion-sensor light flickered on and off as he pinned her against the icy wall — not rushing to do anything, only lowering his head to look at her, as if making sure. She tipped her face up, her lashes trembling hard. It was she who rose onto her toes first. She startled even herself: the same girl who could barely hold another person’s gaze was now, of her own will, kissing a man who did not belong to her. His kiss was fierce, carrying a vengeful force that kissed her soft all over; her hands had nowhere to go, and in the end she fisted them in the front of his shirt.

【He · Best Friend’s Boyfriend】

She was far more forward than she looked. This girl who cowered in corners by day, once the fire was lit, burned hotter than anyone. Her tongue answered him clumsily while her body melted into a puddle and pressed close. He braced one hand on the wall beside her head, and with the other slid down along the neckline of that black dress; far from shrinking away, she let out a soft, almost pleading whimper. That one sound burned away the last shred of his reason.

【She · Good Girl】

The moment his hand closed over her breast, she heard herself make a moan even she did not recognize. Shame burned from the soles of her feet all the way to the crown of her head — she was in a parking-garage stairwell, letting her best friend’s boyfriend knead her breast, while her best friend was just beyond that door, thinking she had only stepped out for air. The image nearly took her legs out from under her; the place between her thighs had already lost all its defenses, slick heat trickling down the crease of her thigh. She had never felt anything like it — not the safe, screen-mediated thrills of her fantasies, but something real, scalding, a transgression that could destroy everything.

He pulled her into the shadow of an empty car in a corner of the garage. What happened next let this girl, who had been good for twenty-six years, taste for the first time what it means that stolen things are the sweetest. And this was only the beginning — she did not yet know that this one night would be like a seed, taking root and sprouting inside her body, growing into a craving she would never be able to quit.
